The Short Leg gate tower was built from 1454 to 1456. In 18th century the first two floors were redesigned as apartments. In the 1980s the upper section of the tower was restored to its original form. Currently it can be visited as part of the Kiek in de Kök museum. Downstairs is used by the early music ensemble Hortus Musicus. The tower is rumoured to be one of the most haunted buildings in the Old town and considering that there is a house ghost or two in most houses of the area, that is realy saying something. There have been sightings of monks, people in old-fashioned dress and even a floating ship. In 1930 several psychic studies were carried out and one of the spirits contacted was that of a former town executioner who later became a monk. Unfortunately that was not enough to atone for all of his sins and his spirit was left to haunt the house for centuries. When Hortus Musicus took over a part of the tower back in 1988, a cleansing and blessing ritual was performed by a pastor and there have been no more sightings since.
