The Town Hall Square or Raekoja plats is the heart of medieval Tallinn. Once a bustling market and a centre of the city life, it nowadays reprises its old role for a month in every December when it holds the famous Tallinn Christmas market. Back in 1441 it was here that the first public Christmas tree in the world was put up by the Brotherhood of Black Heads. The square was also the site of at least one execution which had resulted from a dispute over a bad omelette. The square is surrounded by elaborate merchant’s houses and in the summers it’s packed with terraces attracting tourists. It remains the heart of the city and is often used as a venue for concerts and handicraft fairs. Walk on the square and see if you can find the spot from where you can see all the 5 church spires in the area.
